During this lockdown period with all the uncertainty pertaining to exams, students who are in the Lower 6th could understandably be feeling a bit confused as to the structure of their examinations to come. Some schools may be holding end of year exams for those students coming to the end of Year 12, however, these tests will most likely have a reduced amount of content. Although these exams may be currently being held, a lot of students are unsure as to what content they will need to be well versed in in order to be ready for the following year to come, having missed school time during this pandemic. It is no secret that the jump from GCSE’s to A level’s is a hurdle not to be taken lightly, however, the same can also be said for the jump from Year 12 to 13 and therefore I believe that it is important that students are aware of all the content that was to be taught this year in order to be better prepared for the challenging year to come. Having gone through this transition period already I believe that these tips can be helpful to those moving on from Lower 6th to the Upper 6th during Lockdown.
1. Subject Specification Lists In order to bridge the gap that was formed during a period of missed schooling time, students can easily find out what content wasn’t covered during their Lower 6th year via Specification Lists. All exam boards should have these available online for both teachers as well as students to view and this can help by showing specifically what was to be taught in the 1st year of the students A level.
2. Teachers Another method of obtaining information on what exact content was to be taught this year is by students simply getting in contact with their teachers. I have no doubt that if a student simply sent a quick email to their subject teachers they would have no problem whatsoever in providing the student with a plan of topics and content that they planned on teaching this year.
3. Online Tutoring Having being sent home from school, the experience of having a teacher fill you in on the rest of the content this year is not available to kids in all schools across the UK and hereafter online tutoring is an great option to be considered. Although the previous methods can inform a student of the content that they missed having a tutor online will fully allow them to bridge the gap in their knowledge created by our lockdown restrictions by allowing the material to be taught and tested proactively.

Students that make themselves aware of the content that they missed this year will naturally be at an advantage at the beginning of next year whilst other students are still catching up on missed content. Furthermore, those who are actively getting tested on this content and are regularly using the knowledge that others wouldn’t have yet obtained will have extra time to revise and revisit other topics in a year of education where extra time is a rarity. Although this lockdown has presented challenges for students in Year 12 I believe that with the right mind set it can be used to emerge in Year 13 ahead of the crowd and this is a position that those aiming for top grades would want to be in.
